Cotton is your worst enemy. Cotton KILLS. When it's wet combined with wind,it sucks the heat out of your body. Avoid wearing cotton if you are planning to be out doors for more than a day. Always have a windbreak or a jacket available. If it's waterproof,it's even better.

To stop the effect of wind cooling your body temperature faster than your body can make heat, you need to block the wind. A jacket or windbreaker,or even rain gear,or a plastic garbage bag can make the difference between being uncomfortable,or dying.

In my case, my feet get extremely cold and, in the past, I've only worn cotton socks. This year, working at the mine in severe cold, I started wearing Merino Wool socks with a polypro liner sock as well. My feet have never thanked me so much as when I went to that combo. Merino Wool is a bit more spendy but well worth it to keep the toes warm and pink.

Thanks for the topic, Bill. This is extremely useful info.

I wear Thorlos socks (Combat Boot Socks - Thick Cushion) and besides that they keep the feet warm in cold weather, they keep them cool in warm weather. They have excelent cushioning, and the THOR•LON® Acrylic is anti fungal and anti bacterial.

Sure is, the shit is freaking expensive though. $15 for a pair of socks.
